Monkey hands: the upper character is pronounced *mi*. The lower character is pronounced *hou*. The *Shuowen* states: 'A monkey (獿),' pronounced *nu* + *dao*. Some call it *muhou* (母猴). The *Hanshu* calls it *muhou* (沐猴). Today it is called *housun* (monkey). Wang Yanshou in his rhapsody called it *wangsun*. Today popular speech calls it *husun*. In my view, there are very many kinds of this beast; speaking briefly, there are nearly ten kinds. Now I shall briefly mention their names without recounting them in full detail: there is the macaque (獼猴), the white gibbon (pronounced *yuan*), the grey lutung (pronounced *wang* + *yue*), the black-faced monkey (青獿), the *ju* monkey (pronounced *qi* + *yu*), the *ju* beast (pronounced *ju*), the *you* ape (pronounced *you* + *jiu*), the *wei* monkey (pronounced *yi* in the departing tone, or *yu* + *shui*), and also the *guoran*; all these are varieties of monkeys and apes. Among them, their differences in color and appearance are distinct. Now I shall briefly explain: regarding the beast *guoran*, the *Nanzhou yiwu zhi* states: 'In Jiuzhen's Gupu County, and in the mountain father forest thickets of Jiaozhou and Rinan, all possess this beast. Its name is *guoran*. It is of the genus of gibbons and apes. Its call echoes its own name. Its body is like a gibbon and its face like a dog, dark-green in color or entirely white, with black spots on its flanks. Its body does not exceed three feet, but its tail is over four feet long, looping back over its body to reach beyond its head. Looking at its nose, one sees two nostrils pointing upward toward the sky. Its fur is long, soft, and fine. From time to time in the human world, there are blankets and mats made from the skin of this beast.'
