臭穢（上昌狩反玉篇云臭者物氣之總名也說文云禽走鼻而知其跡者犬也故臭字從犬從自自者占文鼻字也經文有從𣦸作[自/((餐-食)-又+人)]者非也下於𬑔反顧野王曰穢染也韻英云穢惡也考聲云荒蕪也或作薉說文從禾歲聲）。

臭穢 (the upper character is 昌 + 狩 fanqie. The Yupian says: '臭 is the general name for the odor of things.' The Shuowen says: 'The animal that runs and tracks scents with its nose is the dog; therefore the character 臭 takes 犬 [dog] and 自 [nose], 自 being the ancient character for nose.' In scripture texts there are instances where it is written with 𣦸 as [自/((餐-食)-又+人)], which is incorrect. The lower character is 於 + 𬑔 fanqie. Gu Yewang says: '穢 means defiled.' The Yunying says: '穢 means foul.' The Kaosheng says: 'Overgrown with weeds.' Or written as 薉. The Shuowen says it takes 禾 as semantic and 歲 as phonetic).
