無明㲉（枯岳反字書鳥孚𣪊也考聲卵空皮鳥卵之外𣪊也經言無明𣪊喻根本無明及以貪愛包含無量結使煩惱陶鑄有情命業生死宛轉其中不能出離無明窟宅如鳥居卵𣪊故引為喻也）。

Eggshell of fundamental ignorance (wuming qiao: [last syllable] ku-yue fan. The Zishu says: 'The shell of a bird being hatched.' The Kaosheng says: 'The empty membrane of an egg; the outer shell of a bird's egg.' The sūtra speaks of the 'eggshell of fundamental ignorance' as a metaphor for fundamental ignorance along with craving and attachment, which contain boundless fetters and defilements, forging the life, karma, and cyclic existence of sentient beings, in which they toss and turn without being able to escape from the dark cavern-dwelling of fundamental ignorance, just as a bird resides inside an eggshell; hence it is cited as an analogy.)
