(The first character has the fanqie yān-gēng [yīng]. The second character has the fanqie wú-fǔ [wǔ]. It is also written 䳇; both forms are acceptable. The Shanhaijing says: "On Mount Huang there is a bird shaped like [an owl with] green feathers and a red human tongue, capable of imitating human speech. It is named the parrot (yīngwǔ)." Guo Pu says: "The parrot's tongue nowadays resembles that of a young child, and its toes are two in front and two behind. Beyond Funan there are those of five colors; there are also pure white ones, as large as hawks." The Quli says: "The parrot can speak, but does not cease to be a flying bird." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Both characters yīng and wǔ are formed from 鳥 (bird), with 嬰 and 武 as their phonetic components." The Shuowen jiezi also explains that 嬰 (yīng, with the fanqie yì-yíng) is formed from 女 (woman) and 賏 (with the fanqie yì-yíng) as its phonetic component, which is formed from two 貝. The sūtra text nowadays writing it with two 目 above and 安 below as 嬰 is incorrect. The character 武 is formed from 止 and 戈).
