芬馥（芳文反下馮目反考聲云香氣也說文草初生香氣分布從屮丑列反分聲今隸書從草作芬下馥字准前解也）。

芬馥 (fragrant and sweet-smelling): 芬 is *fēn* (芳文反 [pʰɨuʌn]); the lower [character] is *fù* (馮目反 [bɨuk̚]). The *Kaosheng* says: "Fragrance." The *Shuowen* says: "The scent diffused when grass first sprouts; it takes 屮 (*chè*, 丑列反 [ʈʰiɛt̚]) with 分 as its phonetic. In current clerical script it is written with the grass radical as 芬." The lower character 馥 is explained as above.
