魔王（莫何反字書本無此字譯者變摩作之梵云麼羅古譯云能障修行出世業者又云能殺斷惠命故起世經云他化天上初禪之下有魔王波旬宮殿身光壽量勝下劣上威力自在與他化天王等常與諸佛捔力屬爾化天攝梵語名波畢𢮑綠絹反唐云惡欲多愛慾故也）。

魔王 (*mò* + *hé* fanqie; originally character dictionaries lacked this character; the translators altered 摩 to create it; in Sanskrit it is *māra*; older translations say it can obstruct the cultivation of world-transcending karma, and also say it can kill and cut off the life of wisdom. Therefore the *Lokasthiti-sūtra* states: 'Above the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven and beneath the First Dhyāna is the palace of the demon king Pāpīyān, whose bodily radiance and lifespan surpass those below him but are inferior to those above, with sovereign power equal to the king of the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven; he constantly contends in strength with the Buddhas, and is subsumed within the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven.' In Sanskrit he is named Pāpīyān; 𢮑 is pronounced *lù* + *juàn* fanqie; in the Tang language it means 'evil desire', because of his great craving and desire).
