(Sanskrit; the name of a kingdom in the Western Regions; older translations called it 舍衛 [Śrāvastī] or 舍婆提, both of which are phonetic corruptions. The Tang language says 'Kingdom of Hearing and Wealth', meaning that this kingdom produces many people of broad learning (*bahuśruta*) and abounds in precious commodities. The *Samantapāsādikā* also calls it the 'Kingdom of Abundance', saying that it abounds in intelligent and wise people, and the rare treasures of various kingdoms all gather in this country, being rich in goods and produce; therefore it is said to have much abundance—the meaning is the same. In high antiquity there was a person named Śrāvastī who dwelled in this land, hence it was named Śrāvastī; it is in the territory of Central India).
