僧伽胝 (pronounced *zhī*; formerly called 僧伽梨; this translates as 'composite robe' (saṅghāṭī), which is precisely the great robe of contemporary monks; ranging from nine strips at the lowest to twenty-five strips at the highest, it takes only odd numbers, having nine varieties of distinction, fully explained in the Vinaya texts. The Buddha instituted that when entering royal palaces, entering villages, subduing non-Buddhists, or encountering ferocious beasts, one should wear this robe).
