瘖瘂 (the first character is yì-jīn [fanqie: 邑今反]; Shuowen jiezi says unable to speak. The second character is wū-jiǎ [fanqie: 烏賈反]; Picang says 瘂 means mute [瘖]; Wenzi jilüe says the mouth being unable to speak; these explanations are all confused and indistinct: upon examination, 瘖 refers to being silent and producing no sound, whereas 瘂 refers to producing sound but being unable to form words because the tongue cannot turn; nowadays sūtra texts mostly write 啞, which is erroneous, pronounced è, the sound of laughing, and laughing is not the meaning of the sūtra).
