荷擔（上音何下多甘反說文並從人作何儋都甘反玉篇云負任儋何也今經文荷字從草檐從手俗用非本字也音賀者聲轉也）。

荷擔 The first character is pronounced hé; the second is pronounced t- + -ɑm [dān]. The Shuowen jiezi writes both with "person" as 何 and 儋 (pronounced d- + -u / -k- + -ɑm [dān]). The Yupian says: "To bear or carry a burden is 儋何." In the present sūtra text, 荷 is written with "grass" and 檐 with "hand," which are popular usages rather than the original characters. The pronunciation hè is a phonetic shift.
