Song Zhong’s commentary on the Taixuan jing says: “挻 means to blend.” Ru Chun’s commentary on the Han shu says: “To strike.” It is composed of the semantic 手 and the phonetic 延; forms with 土 are incorrect. The second character has the fanqie 時力 [zhí]. Kong’s commentary on the Shangshu says: “Sticky earth is called 埴.” The Shiming says: “Earth that is yellow, fine, and compact is called 埴; 埴 means oily and smooth.” The Imperial Commentary on the Laozi also says: “挻 means to blend; 埴 means clay. A potter blends clay to make earthenware vessels.” It is composed of the semantic 土 and the phonetic 直.)
