Jinggan [stem and trunk] (the first character is fanqie: xing- + -geng; the Boya says: 'The stem of herbaceous plants is called jing.' The Shuowen says: 'The master of the branches; composed of gong, pronounced cao [herb], and jing phonetic; jing is pronounced xing.' The second character is fanqie: gang- + -lan; the Shuowen says: 'Tree branch; composed of gan with gan, fanqie: gan- + -an, as phonetic.' Sometimes written with 'wood' and gan. Both of these characters generally allow for the departing tone, but here the rising tone is adopted).
