幖幟（必遙反通俗文云徽號曰幖說文幖幟也桂苑珠叢幟即幡旗之類也從巾票聲也經文從火作熛誤也火飛也下叱志反廣雅幟幡也史記曰人持赤幟幡也考聲幟頭上記也通俗文云私記曰幟說文同廣雅從巾戠聲也或從志作[巾*(土/心)]亦同經文從火作熾火盛也非經義票音疋遙反戠音之翼反）。

Biaozhi [banners and signs] (the first character is fanqie: bi- + -yao; the Tongsuwen says: 'A distinctive emblem is called biao.' The Shuowen says: 'Biaozhi.' The Guiyuan zhucong says: 'Zhi is of the class of banners and flags; composed of巾 with 票 phonetic.' Writing with the 'fire' radical in the sūtra as 熛 is an error, meaning flying sparks. The second character is fanqie: chi- + -zhi; the Guangya says: 'Zhi means flag.' The Shiji says: 'The men held red flags [zhi]; flags.' The Kaosheng says: 'A record mark upon a banner pole.' The Tongsuwen says: 'A private mark is called zhi.' The Shuowen agrees with the Guangya; composed of 巾 with 戠 phonetic; also written with 志 as [巾*(土/心)], which is identical. In the sūtra text, writing with the 'fire' radical as 熾 means ablaze, which is not the meaning of the sūtra. 票 is fanqie: pi- + -yao; 戠 is fanqie: zhi- + -yi).
