關鍵（上古還反說文云以木持門戶也從門𢇇古還反聲也玉篇云今所謂門檐者也經從弁作閞音弁非也下渠彥反鄭眾注周禮云管籥也說文鍵鉉音縣從金建聲也或作闥或從木作楗同方言云自關而東謂之鍵自關而西謂之鑰鑰牡也）。

關鍵 (Bar and bolt: the first [guan has] the fanqie 古還; the Shuowen jiezi says: 'Using wood to hold doors and gates shut.' It is formed with the gate radical 門 and 𢇇 (fanqie 古還) as phonetic. The Yupian says: 'What is nowadays called a door crossbar.' In the sūtra text, writing it with bian 弁 as 閞, pronounced bian 弁, is incorrect. The second [jian has] the fanqie 渠彥; Zheng Zhong's commentary to the Zhouli says: 'Key and bolt.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Jian means a cross-bolt [xuan 鉉, pronounced xuan 縣].' It is formed with the metal radical 金 and jian 建 as phonetic; it is also written as 闥, or with the wood radical 木 as 楗, which are identical. The Fangyan says: 'From the Pass eastward it is called jian 鍵; from the Pass westward it is called yue 鑰; a yue is a bolt pin').
