Sleeping and waking (meiwu 寐寤: the first character is [pronounced with the] fanqie mi-bi 彌庇; the second is [pronounced with the] fanqie wu-gu 吾固. The Han commentary on the Shijing says: “Mei 寐 means to rest.” The Yupian says: “Sleeping deeply.” The Cang Jie pian says: “Waking and having speech is called wu 寤.” It has already been fully explained above. The Shuowen states that both are composed of an abbreviated 'dream' [component] 㝱 with wei 未 and wu 吾 as their phonetics. Some write them with the 'cave' classifier (xue 穴) or the 'heart' classifier (xin 忄), which are all incorrect. The upper part is composed of 'roof' (mian 宀, pronounced mian 綿); the left is composed of 'half-tree-trunk' (pan 爿, pronounced qiang 墻)).
