Tender and seductive (𡝩冶: the upper character is y[ǎo]-jiǎo [fǎn]; the Mao commentary on the Shijing says: "𡝩 means youthful." The Chuci says: "Alluring postures, tender and lovely." The Guangya says: "𡝩𡝩 denotes appearance." The Shijing's 'the peach tree is graceful and tender (𡝩𡝩)' means a woman in dignified finery. The Shuowen says: "Skilful." It takes the female radical (女) and ǎo (芺) phonetic. 芺 has the same sound as above. The sūtra text written 𰋼 is a vulgar character abbreviated with the woman radical; the Yupian and sūtra texts both give it as p[ú]-gé [fǎn], which does not have this meaning. The lower character yě (冶) is pronounced y[ú]-zhě [fǎn]; the Kaosheng says: "The flirtatious postures of a woman." The Zhouyi's 'Xici Shang' says: "Seductive looks invite wantonness." Liu says: "冶 also means bewitching." The Shuowen says it takes bīng (冫) and tái (台) phonetic. 冫 is pronounced bīng).
