Shoes and socks (鞋韤: the upper character is h[é]-jiē [fǎn], a vulgar usage and not the original character; the standard form takes xī (奚) as [車*奚]. The Jixun says: "Hemp straw sandals with leather soles and hemp cords." Yan's Zheng su yin says: "Nowadays in the inland region, they are made only of hemp; the various southern barbarians make them mixed with leather, bark, and grass." The Kaosheng says: "Straw shoes." [鞮 is] pronounced tí. The lower character is w[ǎn]-fà [fǎn]; the Shuowen says: "Footwear." It takes the leather radical (韋) and miè (蔑) phonetic; sometimes written with leather (革) as 韈. Modern vulgar usage also writes it with clothing, cloth, or skin as 襪, 袾, [巾*(蔑-戍+戊)], or [占*未]. The Yunquan says of these six characters: "All are concoctions of contemporary popular usage, and none can be relied upon").
