The first character is yú-zhě fan (yě); it is also written as 野. The Shuowen jiezi states: "The yěhú (wild fox) is an uncanny beast ridden by ghosts; it possesses three virtues: its colour is balanced and harmonious, it is small in front and large behind, and when dying it points its head toward its native hill; it is larger than a jackal (kroṣṭuka)."
