17.37

矛戟（莫侯反下京逆反說文矛長二丈建於兵車之前也或作鉾方言今戟中有刺者謂之雄戟說文矛字象形戟字從幹省從戈幹音古旦反）。

矛戟 (fanqie: 莫 + 侯; the second character has the fanqie: 京 + 逆; the Shuowen says: "A spear (矛) is two zhang long, mounted at the front of war chariots." Sometimes written as 鉾. The Fangyan says: "Present-day halberds (戟) that have barbed points are called male halberds." The Shuowen says: "The character 矛 is a pictogram; the character 戟 is classified under 幹 abbreviated and under dagger-axe (戈)." 幹 has the fanqie: 古 + 旦).
