Flattering and deceptive (䏣佞; the first is pronounced with the fanqie qi + yu, meaning envious and jealous. The second is pronounced with the fanqie nu + ding, meaning fawning and adulatory. The character is composed of the woman radical [女] and ren [仁, humaneness]. The Analects says: "I detest those who are glib [ning]." This represents the sense derived from "woman". The Zuozhuan states: "I, the unworthy one, am lacking in eloquence [buning] and unable to serve my father and elder brothers." This represents the sense derived from "humaneness").
