Coral (珊瑚: the first character has the fanqie s[āng] + [’]ān; the second character has the sound of hu (胡); the name of a jewel. It comes from foreign lands and grows in the great ocean. It is red and lustrously transparent, shaped like deer antlers with branches and forks. The larger ones are more than a foot tall, and the smaller ones are several inches tall. It is called the coral tree; it is also cut into beads).
