Choking and sobbing (哽噎: the first [character] is geng-xing fan; the Jixun says: "哽 also means to choke [噎]." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Speech blocked, obstructed by the tongue; derived from radical 'mouth' [口] with 更 as phonetic." Sometimes written with radical 'bone' [骨] as 骾, referring to a fishbone stuck in the throat, which compares the breath caught in indignation in the throat to a bone stuck in it. The second [character] is yan-jie fan; the Classic of Poetry says: "My inner heart is choked as if sobbing." The commentary says: "噎 means being so distressed that one cannot breathe." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Choking on food; derived from radical 'mouth' [口] with 壹 as phonetic." In the sūtra text, some write it with 因 as 咽, which is incorrect).
