Pañcāla (般遮羅: the first [character] is ban-an fan. In Sanskrit, pañca [般遮] is the Tang language word for the number 'five'; la means 'to seize'. This is the name of a country and an honorific title for its king. It means that the king of that country was by nature deeply compassionate; even when someone committed a capital crime, he could not bear to execute them, but merely bound their five limbs and sent them to the wilderness or mountain forests. People of the time praised this and consequently took it as the country's name).
