爛臭（上闌且反下昌呪反說文云禽獸走而知其跡者犬也從犬從自自即古文𮮵字也會意字也）。

爛臭 [Rotten and foul-smelling]: The first character is read with the fanqie 闌 [l-] + 且 [-àn] (làn); the second character is read with the fanqie 昌 [ch-] + 呪 [-òu] (chòu). The Shuowen says: 'The animal that runs and tracks the footprints of birds and beasts is the dog; formed from 犬 (dog) and 自 (nose); 自 is the ancient form of the character 鼻 (nose).' It is an ideographic compound.
