慘厲（上倉敢反考聲云慘感也爾雅慘憂也毛詩憂慘慘傳曰慘慘猶戚戚爾雅郭璞注云賢人愁恨皃說文毒也從心參聲也）。

慘厲 [Cruel and severe]: The first character is read with the fanqie 倉 [c-] + 敢 [-ǎn] (cǎn). The Kaosheng says: '慘 means moved/distressed.' The Erya says: '慘 means sorrow.' The Mao Commentary to the Classic of Poetry under 'sorrow is 慘慘' says: '慘慘 is like distressed.' Guo Pu's commentary on the Erya says: 'The appearance of a worthy person grieving and resentful.' The Shuowen says: 'Poisonous; formed from 心 (heart) with 參 acting as phonetic.'
