慘毒(楚錦反借音字也爾推慘悟憎也考聲慘甚也說文慘亦毒也從心參聲經文從石作慘是砂慘字非此義也)。

慘毒 [Cruel and venomous]: Read with the fanqie 楚 [ch-] + 錦 [-ǐn] (cǐn), a borrowed phonetic character. The Erya says: '慘 means hatred.' The Kaosheng says: '慘 means extreme.' The Shuowen says: '慘 also means venomous; formed from 心 (heart) with 參 acting as phonetic.' In the scripture, it is written with the stone radical as 慘 [磣], which refers to sandy grit, not this meaning.
