溝壑（上古侯反鄭注周禮云溝所以通水於川者也廣四尺深四尺曰溝下訶各反鄭注禮記壑坈也爾雅壑虗也郭注云謂坑塹丘墟耳說文壑溝也從叡從土）。

Ditches and gullies (the upper character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 古 + 侯. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: 'A gou (ditch) is that by which water is conveyed to a river; four feet wide and four feet deep is called a gou.' The lower character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 訶 + 各. Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: 'He (gully) is a pit.' The Erya says: 'He means empty.' Guo's commentary says: 'It refers to pits, moats, mounds, and ruins.' The Shuowen says: 'A gully is a ditch; it takes the rui radical and the earth radical').
