Flogged and beaten (the upper character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 必 + 綿. The Shuowen says: 'Bian means to strike; it takes the leather radical with bian as phonetic.' Ancient script writes it as [企-止+(敲-高)]. The lower character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 炭 + 割. The Guangya says: 'Ta means to strike.' The Zhouli says: 'To whip the negligent.' The Gujin zhengzi derives it from the hand radical with da as phonetic; ancient script writes it as [敲-高+(土/羊)], 𢺂, or [描-田+(口/(白-日+(罩-卓+(鼠-臼)))]. In the Shuowen the character da derives from the movement radical with [((嘹-口)-小)-日+(工/十)] as phonetic; [((嘹-口)-小)-日+(工/十)] has the same sound as above).
