The Shiji says: "Borrow the chopsticks in front of us to tally (chou) this for the Great King"; and "devising stratagems (chouce) within the commander's tent." The Shuowen says it has the bamboo radical and the phonetic shou (壽). The second character has the fanqie ch[ǔ] + [g]è; it is also written as 筴; the Shenglei says: "Ce (筴) means tally." Zheng Xuan says: "Chopsticks; ce also means counting-tallies." The Fangyan says: "Between northern Yan, Chaoxian, and the Lieshui, small tree branches are called ce." Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: "Ce means plan." Character dictionaries say: "Ce means calculating plans." Confucius said: "In cautioning regarding affairs, first attend to tallying them."
