譴罰（上企見反廣雅云譴責也蒼頡篇呵也桂菀珠叢怒也說文讁問也從言遣聲也下煩[革*(卄/(ㄇ@儿)/戉)]反考聲云加罪於人曰罰說文小罪也從刀從詈詈字上從冈石經從寸經或作罸通用也）。

譴罰 (The upper character is pronounced 企 + 見 [*qiǎn*]. The *Guangya* says: '譴 means to reprimand.' The *Cang Jie Pian* says: 'To scold.' The *Guiyuan zhucong* says: 'To be wrathful.' The *Shuowen* says: 'To interrogate and blame.' It takes the semantic classifier 言 and 遣 as phonetic component. The lower character is pronounced 煩 + [革*(卄/(ㄇ@儿)/戉)] [*fá*]. The *Kaosheng* says: 'Inflicting punishment on a person is called 罰.' The *Shuowen* says: 'A minor penalty.' It takes 刀 and 詈 as semantic components; 詈 is written with 冈 on top. The Stone Classics write it with 寸. In the sūtra text it is sometimes written as 罸, both forms being interchangeable).
