(The upper character is pronounced 狂 + 位 fanqie. A 匱 is a box; it derives from 匚 with 貴 as phonetic, or is written as 櫃. The sūtra speaks of 'holding back (stashing away) the Dharma' (匱法). 匱 means to be stingy with the Dharma: when the Dharma enters one's body and mind, one secretes it and does not preach it, miserly with the sacred teachings, unwilling to circulate and transmit them, keeping them hidden and concealed just like putting them in a chest; this is called 'holding back the Dharma'. The Buddha taught that this person's sin is extremely heavy: better to commit the uninterrupted [hell deeds] than to hold back the Dharma).
