溝坑 (The first character has the fanqie *gou* + *hou* [gōu]. The *Kaogongji* states: "Between well-fields, four feet wide and four feet deep is called a *gōu*." Zheng's commentary on the *Zhouli* states: "The drainage ditch (*gōu*) of the fields of ten men and two neighboring hamlets is that by which waters connect to streams." The *Shuowen* states: "A *gōu* is a water ditch. Formed with *shui* (water) and has *gou* phonetic." Sūtra editions write it with *tu* (earth) as 𡏞, which is incorrect. 冓 has the same pronunciation. The second character has the fanqie *ke* + *yu* [kěng/kēng]. The *Erya* states: "A *kēng* is a pit-mound." The *Cang Jie Pian* states: "A *kēng* is a ravine; a hollow; a moat." The *Gujin zhengzi* states: "Formed with *fu* (mound) and has *kang* phonetic." Sūtra editions write it with *tu* (earth) as 坑, which is in common use. 亢 is pronounced 坑 [kēng]).
