20.27

傲慢耐（上熬告反孔注尚書云傲慢不友也杜注左傳云傲不敬也廣雅傲倨也說文從人敖聲經本從心作慠誤也中蠻辨反顧野王慢易輕侮也說文云慢情不畏也從心曼聲曼音萬下乃袋反顧野王云耐猶能也說文作耐古字也從彡從而又云或從寸作耐諸法度也故從寸）。

傲慢耐 ("arrogant, contemptuous, and capable"; the first character, fanqie: 熬 + 告. Kong's Commentary to the Shangshu says: "Ao (傲) means arrogant and unfriendly." Du's Commentary to the Zuozhuan says: "Ao means disrespectful." The Guangya says: "Ao means haughty." The Shuowen says: "It takes 人 as semantic and 敖 as phonetic." In the sūtra text it is written with 心 as 慠, which is mistaken. The middle character, fanqie: 蠻 + 辨. Gu Yewang says: "Man (慢) means negligent, slighting, and contemptuous." The Shuowen says: "Man means an attitude lacking reverence; it takes 心 as semantic and 曼 as phonetic." 曼 is pronounced like 萬. The last character, fanqie: 乃 + 袋. Gu Yewang says: "Nai (耐) is like 'capable' (能)." The Shuowen writes it as 耐, an ancient character, taking 彡 and 而; it also says: "Some take 寸 as 耐, signifying all rules and standards, hence taking 寸").
