癡翳常蒙惑（翳於計反方言曰翳薆也珠叢曰薆蔽也文字集略曰翳目障也公羊傳曰眼有眸子而無見曰蒙也言癡為慧眼之障蔽不見真理故常生疑惑也翳字正宜作翳薆音愛也）。

Veiled in ignorance, constantly confounded and deluded (癡翳常蒙惑: 翳 is pronounced with the fanqie 於計 [yì]. The *Fangyan* says: "翳 [yì] means to conceal." The *Zhubian* says: "薆 [ài] means to obscure." The *Wenji lüe* says: "翳 [yì] means an eye cataract." The *Gongyang zhuan* says: "When eyes have pupils but cannot see, it is called 蒙 [méng]." It means that ignorance obscures the eye of wisdom so that one does not see the true reality, thus constantly giving rise to doubts and delusions. The character 翳 should properly be written 翳 [or 薆], pronounced ài).
