"Practicing the methods of the childlike and ignorant" (The Yijing refers to the hexagram Meng (蒙) by saying, "It is not I who seek the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth seeks me." Meng means obscure. Han Kang's commentary says: "Meng means the obscurity of youth." The Yupian also says: "Tong (童) means young, bewildered, and muddled." The Guangya says: "Tong means foolish." Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: "Meng means covered over." The commentary to the Mao Songs says: "Meng means shrouded." This means that what is done out of the foolishness of a youthful heart is muddled and erroneous, as if covered and concealed by an object).
