Cushions and mats [茵蓐] (yin [茵] is pronounced 於真 [ʔ- + (tɕ)iɪn > yīn]; ru [蓐] is pronounced 如欲 [ɲ- + (j)owk > rù]. The Mao Commentary on the Shijing says: “Yin is tiger skin.” The Yupian says: “Using tiger skin as a mat is called yin; the character is also written 鞇.” Guo's commentary on the Erya says: “Ru is a mat.” The Shenglei says: “Ru is a mattress.” In our text, for the two characters yin and ru, if made of grass they take the grass radical; if made of hide they take the leather radical; that the character ru is written with the clothing radical is because they are interchangeable).
