臏割 [Amputating kneecaps and slicing] (臏 has the two pronunciations [in fanqie] 蒲忍 and 扶忍. The Da Dai Liji says: "When a human is born, kneecaps form late, and only after they form can one walk." The Shuowen says: "臏 is the knee bone (膝骨)." The Shangshu dazhuan says: "Those who breach custom barriers and scale city walls to commit robbery along the road receive the punishment of having their kneecaps amputated (臏)." Gu Yewang says: "It refers to the punishment of cutting off the feet, which belongs to the category of cutting feet (䠊) in the Punishments of Lü and the penal mutilation rules in the Rites of Zhou." The character should properly be written with the bone radical [髕]; in copies of the sūtra it is written with the flesh radical [臏], which is a vulgar form).
