禦扞（禦魚舉反扞何旦友郭注尒雅曰禦謂禁制之也杜注左傳曰禦止也扞衛也蔽也蔽謂遮塞之也扞字聲類作捍也）。

Ward off and defend against (*yu* [ward off] is pronounced with the fanqie *yu* + *ju*; *han* [defend] is pronounced with the fanqie *he* + *dan*. Guo Pu's commentary on the *Erya* says: "*Yu* means to prohibit and restrain." Du Yu's commentary on the *Zuo tradition* says: "*Yu* means to halt; *han* means to guard and shield; shielding means blocking." The character *han* [扞] is written as 捍 in the *Shenglei*).
