Chóuzǔ 詶詛 (curses and imprecations; upper character is [zh + y]òu / chóu fanqie; lower character is [zh + zh]ù / zǔ fanqie; xùn and zǔ gloss each other; Zheng [Xuan's] commentary to the Zhouli states: 'Covenants and curses center on oaths and commitments; great affairs are called zǔ.' It also states: 'Those who curse wish to bring evil upon one another.' The proper characters ancient and modern both take the speech radical, with zhōu and qiě as phonetics; also written 譸; zhùzǔ [supplications and curses] is also written 詛 or 謯; the present sūtra edition writes 咒咀, which are vulgar characters in common use).
