Splendid apparel (the first character is *xuan* + *juan* [xuàn]. The Wenzi jilüe says: "Magnificent garments." According to the Kaosheng: "*Xuanlian* means beautiful." Character dictionaries state: "*Xuan* refers to clothes that are beautiful and fresh." The Gujin zhengzi gives it as categorized under 'clothing' [衣] with *xuan* [玄] phonetic).
