Stuttering and slow of speech (the first character is *jian* + *yan* [jiǎn]. The Fangyan says: "*Jian* means stuttering." The Gujin zhengzi gives it under 'speech' [言] with an abbreviated *han* [寒] phonetic. If the sūtra text writes it under 'foot' as 蹇, that is not this meaning. The second character is *nu* + *gu* [nè]. Bao's commentary on the Analects says: "*Ne* means slow and dull." The Shuowen says: "Hesitant; categorized under 'speech' [言] with *nei* [內] phonetic").
