The hundred grains (gǔ is pronounced with the fanqie 古 + 木 [gǔ]; the Shuowen says: "Gǔ means to achieve/yield." The Huayan yinyi says: "According to Yang Quan's Wuli lun: millet [liáng] is the general term for broomcorn and foxtail millet; rice [dào] is the general term for nonglutinous and glutinous rice; beans [shū] is the general term for various legumes. These three grains each have twenty varieties, totaling sixty; the fruits of vegetables and trees each have twenty varieties, which supplement the grains, totaling one hundred grains. Therefore the Classic of Poetry says: 'Sowing those hundred grains.' The Zhouyi says: 'The hundred grains, grasses, and trees cling to the earth.'").
