Melting and dissolving (xiāo [銷], [fanqie:] xiao + diao; the Shuowen says: to melt metal; it is composed of jīn [metal] with xiāo phonetic. The sūtra writes xiāo [消] with the water radical, which is the xiāo of "waning and waxing," not the appropriate character here).
