覺觀（玉篇云覺警也察也觀見也視也成實論云覺觀在初禪也經云內有覺觀外感火灾唐三藏譯為尋伺也）。

Applied thought and sustained thought (The Yupian says: jué means to be alert, to inspect; guān means to see, to observe. The Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: "Applied and sustained thought are in the first dhyāna." The sūtra says: "Internally having applied and sustained thought, externally one attracts the calamity of fire." The Tang Tripiṭaka Master translated them as vitarka and vicāra).
