Spears and lances (for the first character, the fanqie is 莫 [m-] + 候 [-ou]; the Lüshi chunqiu says: "Chiyou made spears"; the Kaosheng says: "a generic term for weapons like spears and halberds"; the Shuowen says: "a spear two zhang long, mounted on war chariots; a pictographic character"; the sūtra text writes it as 鉾, a vulgar character; for the second character, the fanqie is 雙 [sh-] + 卓 [-ak]; the Boya says: "a shuo is also a spear"; the Gujin zhengzi says: "a shuo is eighteen feet long"; the Wenzi dian说 says: "the halberd-lance of today; formed with the 'spear' radical and xiao 肖 phonetic"; the sūtra text writes it as 㮶; 㮶 is like a shed, which is not the sense in the sūtra).
