蚖 (*yuan* [viper/salamander]: *Zilin* [gives the fanqie] *wu* + *guan*; *Qieyun* also has *yu* + *yuan* fanqie; in ancient script written as 螈; *Yupian*: "the *sheyi* [skink]"; the *rongyuan*, the *xiyi*, the *yanting*, and the *shougong* are four distinguished names; Cui Bao's *Gujin zhu* [states]: "The *rongyuan*, one name is *sheyi*, the large ones being three feet long; its color is dark navy-black, and it is skilled at bewitching people; another name is *xuanyuan*"; the *Hanshu* says 螈; Wei Zhao says: "The *heiyuan* is the lizard; when inside a house it is called *shougong* [house gecko]; its blood is smeared on a woman's arm, and if the woman commits a fault, it will not wash off, hence named *shougong* [palace-guard]; in grass and rocks it is named *yixi* [lizard]; in marshes it is named *yanting*; the general name is *rongyuan*"; according to this, the *Yijiao jing* was miscopied as: 'For example, like a black *yuan* sleeping in your chamber'; it should read 'black *yuan*' [螈], properly meaning *yuan* [salamander], but because 蚖 and 𧈭 are similar, it was erroneously copied thus; or someone says: 蚖 has two kinds: one is the *shougong*, the other is a short black snake; the *Yijiao jing* is not mistaken, hence it also says there: 'Only when the sleeping snake has gone out can one sleep peacefully'; the 𧈭 is a short black snake, distinct from other snakes and not a *shougong*; were it not so, then in this sūtra below, it distinguishes the *shougong*, so why would it repeat 蚖 above? How redundant that would be! Hence the secular texts' explanations differ from the meaning in the sūtra; I once saw a monk from the South say that when a 蚖 bites a person, only the 'Medicine King grass' left behind can treat it, and if one lacks it, the person will certainly die).
