蔓莚（西京賦云其形蔓莚洪範上音万下餘戰反廣雅蔓長也延遍也王延壽軒檻蔓莚謂長不絕有作延火災連燒如蔓草又以然反如蓆火災長不絕）。

蔓莚 (Spreading and extending; the 'Western Capital Rhapsody' says: "Its shape is spreading and extending (màn-yán)." The Hongfan has the upper character pronounced wàn, the lower yú-zhàn fanqie. The Guangya says: "Màn means long; yán means widespread." Wang Yanshou says: "Balustrades spreading and extending," meaning continuous without break. Some write 延; when a fire disaster spreads consecutively like creeping vines, it is also pronounced yǐ-rán fanqie, spreading continuously like a mat, where the fire disaster does not cease).
