虎魄 (Amber; pǔ-bó fanqie [pò]. The Guangya says it is the name of a gem, also written with the character 珀. The Han shu records that Jibin has amber. The Bowuzhi says: "Pine resin entering the earth for a thousand years turns into fuling (poria); fuling for a thousand years turns into amber; another name is red pearl." The Guangzhi says: "Amber is produced in the ground; on and around it no plants or trees grow. The deep ones are eight or nine feet down, as large as a bushel; scraping away the crust yields amber inside. When first in sap it is like peach gum, and turns solid as it hardens. People in the western regions use it to make seal rings; ring (𭾅) is wū-guǎn fanqie").
