The hundred grains (百穀: [穀 is pronounced with the fanqie] 古木 [gǔ]. The Shuowen says: *gu* means to continue; it is the general term for the hundred grains. Yang Quan's Wulilun says: *liang* is the collective name for proso and foxtail millet; *dao* is the collective name for non-glutinous and glutinous rice; *shu* is the collective name for the various beans. Each of the three grains has twenty varieties, totaling sixty. The fruits of vegetables and trees auxiliary to grain each have twenty varieties, totaling one hundred kinds. Therefore the Shijing says: 'Sowing the hundred grains.' The Zhouyi says: 'The hundred grains, grasses, and trees cling to the earth.' This is what is meant).
