A tall marker of a golden pillar (長表金剎: in Sanskrit it is called *śmaśāna*, translated here as a burial mound. In the Western Regions, the dead are sometimes cast out to birds and beasts, or their bones are gathered and cremated, or they are buried underground, with markers erected above by piling up bricks and stones, resembling a stūpa but humble and small in shape. Here, this 'tall marker' is precisely a golden pillar/spire (*kṣetra*), not that type of [burial] marker. In Sanskrit it is called *chattra*; in that land there is no other flagstaff, so banners are hung directly atop the mast on the hemispherical dome of the stūpa. What is now called a *ch剎* [kṣetra] is phonetically corrupted; being made of gold, and tall with a marker, it is called a 'golden kṣetra').
